1.Research Assistant Programme (RAP)
Focus: Africa-‐focused research,writing and analysis, e.g. brief reports, newsletters, papers, interviews, transcriptions, desktop research, writing and analysis, depending on skills and interest.
Period: Commit for three months.
Applicants: Apply if you are a 3rd year, Honours, Master’s or Doctorate level student.
Preference: Is given to (1) Johannesburg-‐based students, (2) Africa-‐based students and (3) African student studying outside of Africa.
Benefit to RAs:
– Johannesburg-‐based RAs are usually remunerated
– MA and PhD students are usually remunerated
– RAs are publicall acknowledged for their contributions to projects where possible
– RAs may add project work to their CVs
– Valuable experience in research work
– RAs who complete the RAP are provide with a professional certificate of completion as well as a reference letter.
– There may be opportunities to become involved in future projects following completion of the RAP.
- Africa Conflict Monitor (ACM) RAP
Focus: This programme offers involvement in production of IOA’s Africa Conflict Monitor (ACM).
Period: Commit for six months.
Applicants: Apply if you are a 3rd year, Honours, Master’s or Doctorate level student.
Preference: Is given to Africa-‐based applicants, but everyone is welcome to apply.
Areas of involvement: Research, writing, fact-‐checking, creating info-graphics.
Benefit to ACM RAs:
– All RAs are acknowledged for their contributions to ACM in the team section of the publication.
– Their involvement may be included on their Cvs
– Great work experience in Africa-‐focused research and writing
– RAs who complete the RAP are provided with a professional certificate of completion as well as a reference letter.
- Marketing RAP (MRAP)
Focus: Marketing-‐related research and activities for IOA, possibly in-‐office.
Period: Commit for three months.
Applicants: Students with an interest in marketing and business development -‐ 3rd years and Honours students.Disciplined self- starters required.
Preference: Is given to Johannesburg-‐based students, but the programme will expand to include other African countries next year.
Benefit to MRAs:
– RAs who perform well may be offered remunerated or commission-‐based positions
– Work experience in research and marketing
– Attendance of events as an IO representative
– RAs who complete the RAP are provided with a professional certificate of completion as well as a reference letter.
