Fun things to do during your varsity break

You’ve attended classes, worked hard, skipped on sleep and you’re exhausted. And now it’s the end of the semester and you need a break. Use your free time wisely because before you know it, you’ll have to pack your suitcase and head back to campus. You could use the break to learn a new skill or just catch up on some much-needed sleep. Whatever you do, just make sure you make the most of your holiday.

Here are a few fun things you can do during the holidays.

TV (series) marathon

Deadlines, tests and hectic work schedules, all have one thing in common. They leave you with little time to do anything else. And that’s why the holidays are the perfect time to catch up on a series. You could veg on the couch with your blankie and enjoy a marathon session of favourite series. And the best part is you can stay up as late as you want, without worrying about class the next day.

Spend time with your loved ones

During the semester, you may have experienced bouts of homesickness. You miss sitting with your family and watching TV. And you even miss the banter between you and your siblings. So, during the holidays, you need to spend quality time with your family.

Internship

If you would prefer to use your time more productively, then you can start applying for internships. You could search for companies which spark your interest and work there. Internships are a great way to get your foot in the door in the working world. And they are also a good way to gain experience. If you don’t have the experience you might it makes it difficult to land a job. And there’s no better time like the present to build up your skills and fill your CV with experience.

Prepare for the coming semester

The early bird always gets the worm. And you can use your holiday to prepare yourself for the coming semester. You could start making notes and try to understand the work before you start attending classes. Preparing in advance will help you grasp the work more easily. Just make sure you don’t over do it because you’re supposed to use the holidays for rest.

Explore the city

You may not have a lot of money to spend but that doesn’t mean you should stay cooped up in the house. You could explore the city, go for a hike or go to the local museum and explore some art. If you’re a water baby, then why don’t you head out to the ocean or pool and spend time surfing or swimming?

Pamper yourself

You could go for a manicure, massage or a facial. Or why not do it all? There’s nothing more relaxing than being in a spa and having someone pamper you for a few minutes. Whether you get a full massage or just have your hands massaged, it’s a sure way to rejuvenate you.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to not only help people in need but it’s also to meet new people. And it’ll also look impressive on your CV and could put you above other candidates when you apply for job or internship.

Road trip

The friends who road trip together stay together. What’s more fun than travelling in a car with your friends while belting out some tunes at the top of your lungs? Road trips are the perfect excuse to bond with your friends while enjoying the scenery. And travelling will help you escape and forget any stress you may have in your life. So, sit back and relax, and enjoy the view and good company.

Spend time with your friends

If you can’t afford a road trip, then there are other ways you can get together with friends. You and your friends might have gone to separate schools and you might not get to see each other often. You could be studying in the Western Cape while they’re far out in Limpopo. You and your friends can catch up by going shopping, having sleepovers or going out for coffee.

Read a book

You’ll most likely spend most of your semester studying or completing assignments. And may end up feeling mentally and physically exhausted. You could also feel like you have zero energy left. Take time out to relax by reading, whether it’s a biography or fiction. Books are the perfect means to escape and be transformed into another world.

Channel your inner chef

Whether you want to be as good as the contestants on Masterchef or you just want to learn the basics, you should learn to cook. And there’s no better time than the present to learn. You could ask your family for help or watch some YouTube videos which can help you enhance your skills. In order to get the best results when you cook, use quality cookware. Stainless steel cookware maintains an even temperature throughout the surface of the pots and pans. Which means the food will be cooked evenly and you won’t have parts of the food which are raw and some that are overcooked.

The holidays are a good time to completely let go and forget about school. Taking a break is beneficial because it helps you recharge your brain and relax.
