How to survive your first job interview

Job interviews can be super stressful, especially if you’re doing it for the first time. You ask yourself questions such as am I qualified enough? Is this jacket ok? What if I sit in the wrong chair? To help you make sure that everything goes according to plan, here are some tips on how to survive your first job interview.

Do your research

It’s important that you look up the company and position that you are applying for before you head to the interview. This is because, at the end of the interview, employers tend to ask if you have any questions. Make sure to jot down any information you would like to ask at the end. This way you’ll be able to ask questions without forgetting to do so.

Write down key points

As we said before, you should write down questions you have for your interviewer. But it’s also a good idea to write down some key points about yourself. For some of us, the stress from the situation can leave us blank. So if you write down some of your strengths and weaknesses, as well as any other information you would like to share, this can be a huge help.

Dress to impress

When it comes to interviews, first impressions are everything. So before you even step out of the house, make sure that you’re clothes are neat and tidy. But another thing that you should keep in mind is what kind of workplace you are interviewing for. Is it casual? Smart? Make sure to ask these questions before the interview so you know how to dress for the day.

Don’t freak out

Yes, a job interview is a super stressful situation, but you have to keep yourself calm in the moment. This is just an opportunity for your potential employer to get to know you. So take a deep breathe and be yourself – talk about your unique experiences and the skills you have to offer the company. Be sure to also talk about what drives you and what your passions are.

No matter what interview you’re at, remember to keep it together and to just be yourself. You may not ace your first job interview but it will give you some experience into how you can improve for next time.
