How to improve your eating habits

Diets don’t always work. You’ll start off well and stick to it for the first couple of days, but then the stress builds up and you find yourself binge eating some ice cream. If you want to be healthy and lose some weight, there are easier ways than starving yourself with crazy diets. Just by making some changes to your eating habits you’ll soon start to see an improvement in your food choices.

Write down what you eat

This isn’t about writing down all the calories in your food. This is about keeping track of your daily food intake. So if you have steak and chips for lunch, with chocolate mousse for dessert, you write it down. This will help you to get a sense of what you are eating and what foods you can swap for healthier ones.

Make small changes

Trying to change your eating habits all at once can be very difficult. So rather than going for big changes, you should start by setting small goals. For example, swapping high-sugar drinks out for water can help you cut down on your sugar intake. So just by making small changes to your diet, you can make a big difference to your health.

Eat your meals at the table

Did you know that you eat more when you are multitasking or when you’re distracted?
Having your meals at a table or in the kitchen means that your focus will be on eating instead of being on your television, phone or laptop. So next time you have a meal, make sure to put all the distractions away so that you can really focus on what you are eating.

Don’t completely cut out unhealthy foods

If you’ve ever tried going on a diet, you’ve probably realised just how difficult it is to completely cut off your favourite unhealthy foods. Rather than cutting these out, you should incorporate more healthy foods into your diet. So make sure to keep vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products (like low-fat yogurt) and whole-grain foods at work and home so that they are within easy reach.

Eat your snacks from a bowl

When you eat your snacks, such as popcorn and chips, out of a bag you actually end up eating more than you want. So make sure that you put your snacks in a plate or bowl so that you regulate just how much you eat.

Changing the way you eat can be challenging. But just by making a couple of changes to your eating habits you can actually improve your diet in a big way. So next time you want to lose some weight or just want to eat healthier, rather go for some of these changes than trying out the next big diet trend.
